Gloucestershire FA Under 16s Maintain Unbeaten Record

Gloucestershire Youth U16 entertained near neighbors Somerset Youth U16 in the South and West Counties Championship Competition at Oakland's Park on Sunday 31st January maintaining their unbeaten record in the Group by wining 3-1 after falling behind to an early goal by Somerset. Gloucestershire now lead the Group by 5 points from Hampshire Youth U16 with two games to play. Peter McPherson Reports.....

Due to heavy ground frost overnight the Referee from Oxfordshire after early inspections prior to kick-off declared the ground playable to enable the match to go ahead.

The early midfield play by both teams was of a high standard with the Gloucestershire team excerting early pressure on the Somerset goal forcing several corners but were unable to take advantage of several opportunities to score.

Somerset went 1-0 up on 17 minutes when they were awarded a free kick on the left just outside the penalty area when Michael Goulding(Wells City) scored direct from the kick beating the home team keeper Jordan Dunning (Stoke Lane Athletic) the ball passing the three man wall and entering the net just inside the near post.

Gloucestershire continued to put pressure on the Somerset defense and equalized on 23 minutes when Kalen Grant-Davies(AEK Boco) scored from close range when the Somerset keeper Alex Tremlett (Hutton) failed to hold the ball allowing the ball to enter the net.

The Home Team took the lead on 32 minutes when Sam Thomas(Ashton Boys) head home from a cross on the right to give Gloucestershire a 2-1 lead at the interval.

Second half opened with both sides playing attractive midfield football Gloucestershire using their wingers to advantage creating a number of chances but failing to find the target. the Away Team keeper being in top form keeping the Home Team at bay with several good saves.

Gloucestershire went further ahead on 74 minutes when Grant-Davies scored his second forcing the ball into the from close range inside the six yard box to give Gloucestershire a 3-1 lead

Both teams created several chances to score but were unable to apply the finishing touches and the game ended with a 3-1 victory for the Home Team
