2:42 PM, Monday, 01 February 10. Women and Girls

On Wednesday 26th January Gloucestershire Senior Women entertained last season's Champions, Devon Women in the South and West Counties Championship Competition at Oaklands Park. The game was tightly contested with Devon running out 2-0 winners and Gloucestershire left still looking for their first win of the Season. Peter T McPherson reports...

The first 15 minutes of the match saw both sides produce attractive approach football but failing to create any clear cut chances with both defenses holding firm. On 16 minutes Gloucestershire’s Charley Cooney (Forest Green Rovers), had a fierce shot from 25 yards which was saved by the Devon keeper Jade Tregale (Newquay) who dived full length to save the shot. A few minutes later Gloucestershire’s Grace Bunker (Downend Flyers) had a shot which was off target.

On 20 minutes Devon were on the attack and a 20 yard free kick taken by Katie Middleton (Bristol Academy) was saved by the Gloucestershire keeper Zoe Hodgson (Downend Flyers). A minute later Gloucestershire gained a free kick from a useful position but Lorea Sarobe (Cheltenham) shot went straight at the Devon keeper. On 29 minutes Devon took the lead when a 20 yard shot from the left by Tash Knapman (Totnes & Dartington) found the net when Gloucestershire keeper Zoe Hodgson failed to hold the the ball which dropped into the goal.

Five minutes later Devon went further ahead when Sophie Drake (Plymouth Argyle) had a good run down the right flank beat the Gloucestershire full back crossing to her Club colleague Aoife Ahrese who lobbed the Gloucestershire keeper Hodgson to give Devon a 2-0 lead. Just before the Hodgson was in action again when two shots by Devon Knapman from point blank range was well saved by Gloucestershire keeper.

The second half started like the first with both sides playing fluent passing football with defenses being on top. On 59 minutes following a good run down the right flank, Grace Bunker netted from a narrow angle for Gloucestershire but the goal was immediately disallowed for offside.

Devon had a chance to increase their lead on 67 minutes when an opportunity fell to Knapman but the shot was saved by the outstretched foot of Hodgson. Gloucestershire continued to press forward and a speculative shot by Charlotte King (Forest Green Rovers)flew over the Devon crossbar then three minutes later Kelly Hall (Winscombe) had a powerful driver shot saved by Devon keeper Tregle. A late chance fell to Devon’s Middleton but her long range shot was saved by Hodgson.  Final Score Devon 2- Gloucestershire 0.
