50 Years Service to Football Honoured

Over the last three months, the Gloucestershire Football Association has acknowledged the 50 Years service that seven individuals have given to football in the county.  The special FA Awards recognise the commitment that the recipients have made to the grassroots game, efforts without which many clubs and Leagues would not have survived and succeeded without

The recipients, with details of their involvement and commitment to football, are as follows:

Robert Arthurs started his association with the GFA when playing for Wotton Rovers in 1946. After 10 seasons as a player he took on the responsibility of Secretary for Bonded United (1958– 65) and then Counterslip FC (1965-1975) in the Bristol & Suburban League. Since 1975, Mr Arthurs has been the Vice-chairman and is now the President of the Bristol & Suburban League.

George Mallett played outside left for Conham Rangers in the 1949-50 season taking on the responsibilites of club Secretary the following season. Since 1970, Mr Mallett has been involved with the management of the Bristol Downs League occupying a number of official positions in that time; Registration Secretary, Referees Secretary, Fixture Secretary and General Secretary. Elected to the GFA Council in 1971, Mr Mallett held the post of Disciplinary Secretary for the GFA for 18 years between 1978 and 1996 later becoming Vice-President in 2004.

David Hughes received a special award from the GFA marking the completion of 50 years as football reporter for Bristol Evening Post in 2006-07 season. During this time he has covered all the local football Leagues and competitions in Bristol. David first started playing at the age of 14 on the Downs for Savoy United ending his playing career at the age of 52 with St Andrews. During that time, he also played for Soundwell, Brislington and Easton Rangers. Additionally, Mr Hughes is Vice-President of the Bristol Premier Combination, Bristol & District and Bristol & District Sunday Leagues and having previously been the President, now has Life Membership of the Avon Youth League.

John Croome spent 32 years as player for Sneyd Park (1948 to 1980) and acted as club Social Secretary between 1965 and 1972 then served 4 years as Assistant Club Secretary (1972 to 1976).  Having hung up his boots, he became Vice Chairman of Sneyd Park and in addition, took on the responsibility of Dressing Room Manager (1980 to 2006).  John is the current President of the club (since 1997).

Brian Gay spent 33 years as player for Sneyd Park (1952 to 1985) acting as team Secretary for 12 years between 1970 and 1982.  In 1982 he became Hon. Secretary of Sneyd Park a post he held until 2002.

Don Stone, the third recipient from Sneyd Park, played for 22 years (1965 to 1978) before becoming Vice Chairman in 1972 and then Chairman in 1978, a post he held until 1998.

Peter John Lees started playing for Bibury AFC in the 1952/53 season & played until 1980.  Since 1968, has been a club committee member of Bibury AFC, spending 9 years as club Treasurer (1968 to 1977).  He is now the current Club Chairman (since 1986).
