Clifton are listed as the first winners of the competition in 1887-88. Competition rules state that the cup shall be competed for by member clubs of the F.A. Premier League or Football League. From 1902 until the suspension of the tournament, Bristol City and Bristol Rovers were the only 2 club names to be added to the list of holders.
